I noticed on the way into work this morning that the odemeter in the mystic cobra isn't working.
My first thought was that maybe the 23 tooth speedo gear that plugs into the tranny had worn out. I've heard this is a common problem with 23 tooth speedo gears cause it's not a Ford gear and doesn't mesh exactly right, so they tend to wear out.
However, if that was the case then the speedo shouldn't work either right? The speedo works just fine, but no odometer. Anyone got any ideas? I hope I'm not going to have to replace the odometer on the mystic.
Did you just hit 100000 miles on that and it didn't just go back to 0? :P If it's like the old speedos, they're gear driven also, it may have just slipped off, to fix, you'll have to pull the cluster out and probably dis-assemble the unit.

After doing some searching on the internet, it appears this is a somewhat common problem with 94-98 mustangs. The odometer is turned by gears which are run by the speedometer. As the gears age they get brittle and break/crumble. I have found a few places that sell the drive gear for $25 or a set of drive and worm gears for $48-50.
I'm going to attempt to do this myself. I've pulled the cluster before and that's pretty easy. What I'm not sure about is digging into the speedometer/odometer assembly. We'll see how it goes. If I'm able to assess the gears and get them out, I'll order the new ones. If not, I also found a place that you can ship the whole cluster to for $169 and they will fix it. That includes shipping.

Just an update fro anyone who is interested. I pulled the instrument cluster on Saturday. I was then able to slowly and carefully take it apart. The speedometer is driven electronically, but there is a little motor plugged into the speedometer board which drives the odometers. On the motor is a worm gear which turns a drive gear, which then turns a gear on a shaft for both odometers. I found the worm gear to be broken off. Will be ordering new gear either today or tomorrow.
